When your nerves strike.
Diabetic polyneuropathy is a common secondary disease of diabetes, characterized by nerve damage, especially in the feet and legs. It manifests itself through numbness, tingling, pain and reduced sensitivity, which can severely affect the daily life of those affected. In addition to physical complaints, many sufferers also suffer from psychological stress such as anxiety and depression.
Often, abnormalities also develop in the autonomic nervous system, which regulates automatic body functions (such as blood pressure, heartbeat, bowel function and bladder control). Typical symptoms are constipation, impaired sexual function and fluctuating blood pressure - the most noticeable is a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing up.
Since drug therapy often comes...
1. Treatment of causes & lifestyle adjustment
The first step in managing diabetic polyneuropathy is, of course, addressing the underlying cause. This means effectively managing diabetes mellitus through medication, diet, and lifestyle adjustments. Alongside medication, healthy nutrition plays a central role:
Key Nutritional Focus Areas
Omega-3 fatty acids:
These anti-inflammatory fatty acids are found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, as well as in flax seeds, chia seeds and walnuts.
Leafy green vegetables:
Spinach, kale and other dark green leafy vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals that are important for nerve health.
Whole grain products:
Whole grains such as whole wheat bread, brown rice and oats are rich in B vitamins, which are essential for nerve function.
Berries and cherries:
These...
2. Medications
Prescription medications such as anticonvulsants, antidepressants (especially tricyclics and SSRIs), and specialized pain patches are used to alleviate polyneuropathy symptoms, though they may come with potential side effects. Anticonvulsants, typically used to treat epilepsy, can sometimes be effective by reducing the hyperexcitability of nerve cells.
Common over-the-counter painkillers, however, show little sustained success in treating neuropathic polyneuropathy. Opioids are also used but can lead to severe side effects and dependency with prolonged use.
Antidepressants may cause dry mouth, constipation, and dizziness. Weight gain and sleep disturbances are also possible side effects.
Anticonvulsants may result in fatigue and dizziness, as well as weight gain, edema, or fluid retention, particularly in the legs.
3. Physiotherapy
Targeted physiotherapy can be highly beneficial in treating polyneuropathy. Specific exercises and techniques – such as stretching and muscle strengthening – help reduce pain and improve functionality. Another advantage is that a professional physiotherapist can use manual therapy to address specific problem areas individually. In Germany, many practices specialize in the standard treatment of chronic polyneuropathy.
Acupressure and acupuncture are traditional treatment methods that can help relieve nerve pain in some patients. Both aim to balance the body’s energy flow, which can contribute to pain relief.
4. Cold therapy
Let's move on to our absolute favorite, because the application of cold in polyneuropathies has outstanding effects on the nervous system, which can contribute to the direct relief of symptoms.
To understand this effect, it helps to look at the body's physiological reactions to cold.
Slowing of nerve conduction velocity:
Cold slows down the speed of transmission of nerve impulses. In the extremities, this can lead to a reduction in unpleasant sensations such as tingling, burning or pain. The nerves are less "reactive", which can lead to a certain calming of the symptoms.
Reduction of the inflammatory response:
Although inflammation is not necessarily a primary factor in polyneuropathy, an accompanying inflammatory response in...
RELAXATION THROUGH COOLING
As described above, the application of cold can effectively alleviate the unpleasant and painful symptoms of polyneuropathy. This type of therapy is therefore increasingly used in medicine - e.g. in the form of cryochambers or cooling ointments.
