When the joints burn & hurt.
Rheumatism is a general term for more than 400 different diseases that are grouped together under the “rheumatic group”. These diseases often affect the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints and cartilage), but can also affect muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves.
One of the most common rheumatic diseases is rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which causes chronic inflammation in joints, tendon sheaths or bursae. The body mistakenly attacks its own tissue, which can lead to severe pain, swelling and impaired mobility. Rheumatism can spread gradually to more and more joints and even cause irreversible damage.
Those affected therefore often suffer from a severe impairment of their quality of life. Even when inflammation is well controlled, many patients continue to suffer from pain, which often occurs without any clear stimulus and is difficult to treat. Possible causes include the process of sensitization, neuropathies (i.e. damage to the nerves themselves) or fibromyalgia .
The good news is that if detected early, RA can be treated well - provided that a quick and clear diagnosis is made. Below we provide a rough overview of the most promising treatment approaches: from drug treatment to cold therapy, which has become increasingly important in recent years.
This is where our cooling gel Kalter Bruder® comes in: It provides quick help with its long-lasting and strong cooling effect!
1. Drug therapy
Drug therapy is often the first measure for rheumatoid arthritis to control inflammation and relieve pain. Commonly used medications include basic therapeutics that can reduce disease activity in the long term and prevent damage to the joints. However, these only take effect after a few weeks. In acute phases, cortisone can be used, which works quickly and inhibits inflammation. However, cortisone is only suitable as a short-term solution, as it can cause side effects if taken over a long period of time. Painkillers such as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are often...
2. Physiotherapy & Occupational Therapy
Targeted exercise and therapy are essential to maintain joint function and strengthen the muscles. Physiotherapy helps to relieve pain, relieve tension and promote mobility. Occupational therapy supports those affected in their everyday lives and shows techniques for working in a way that is gentle on the joints. Light, regular exercise - such as swimming, cycling or gentle gymnastics - helps to promote blood circulation and support the healing process. Yoga and specific stretching exercises can also help to relax the muscles and increase the resilience of the joints. Exercise is not only...
3. The right diet
An anti-inflammatory diet can help to alleviate symptoms. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fatty fish, linseed and walnuts, are particularly recommended as they have an anti-inflammatory effect. Antioxidants from fruit and vegetables, especially berries and green leafy vegetables, also support cell health. Rheumatism patients should also ensure they have an adequate supply of vitamin D, which contributes to bone health. However, too many animal fats, sugar and processed foods should be avoided as these can promote inflammation in the body. A balanced diet can complement the entire treatment approach...
4. Cold therapy
In rheumatoid arthritis, targeted cooling can be an effective method to relieve inflammation and reduce pain. The application of cold reduces the activity of the pain receptors and slows down the inflammatory process, which can reduce swelling and quickly relieve symptoms. Constant, deep-acting cooling is particularly helpful because it reaches the inflamed structures without intense cold triggering counter-reactions in the body. While special cold chambers are not accessible to most people in everyday life, cooling ointments or gels offer a practical alternative. These can be applied specifically to the affected areas and...
