Bursitis often occurs due to repeated strain or pressure on joints such as the knee, shoulder or elbow. Typical causes are excessive strain during sport, working for long periods in a stressful position or injuries. But infections or when inflammatory diseases such as rheumatism or gout spread to the bursa can also result in bursitis. In any case, persistent pain and swelling in the joints should always be examined by a doctor.

The typical symptoms of bursitis include swelling, redness and heat development in the affected area. The inflammation usually leads to severe pain, which limits the movement of the joint. Depending on the severity, bursitis can be acute or chronic, with the pain often increasing with movement.

Before treating bursitis, it is important to determine the exact cause in order to rule out other diseases as triggers. In the early stages, bursitis can often be treated conservatively: elevating and immobilizing the joint often brings relief. If the symptoms are more severe, anti-inflammatory painkillers are used. If fluid accumulates in the joint, a puncture or local treatment with cortisone may be necessary. If a bacterial infection is the cause, antibiotics are administered.

1. Rest & Care

If you have bursitis, the affected joint is overstressed and the inflamed bursa causes pain. 2. Drug therapy

Cortisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent and can speed up healing, but possible side effects should be considered. 3. Physiotherapy and light exercise
