When your nerves strike.
It may be hard to believe, but it’s true: Around 15 to 22 million people in Europe are estimated to suffer from polyneuropathy. This manifests itself in varying degrees of pain, numbness and tingling, and is a burden for those affected – especially when the body actually wants to rest.
The consequences are often devastating: Chronic pain, sleep deprivation, and increasing loss of mobility significantly impact daily life. Many sufferers experience exhaustion and psychological comorbidities such as depression and anxiety disorders. Since medication-based treatments often come with severe side effects, many individuals seek alternative treatment methods.
On this page, we present the most promising remedies and solutions – particularly cold therapies,...

1. Medications
Prescription medications such as anticonvulsants, antidepressants (especially tricyclics and SSRIs), and specialized pain patches are used to alleviate polyneuropathy symptoms, though they may come with potential side effects. Anticonvulsants, typically used to treat epilepsy, can sometimes be effective by reducing the hyperexcitability of nerve cells.
Common over-the-counter painkillers, however, show little sustained success in treating neuropathic polyneuropathy. Opioids are also used but can lead to severe side effects and dependency with prolonged use.
Antidepressants may cause dry mouth, constipation, and dizziness. Weight gain and sleep disturbances are also possible side effects.
Anticonvulsants may result in fatigue and dizziness, as well as weight gain, edema, or fluid retention, particularly in the legs.

2. Nutrition
By far the most valuable and sustainable thing you can do for your body when you have polyneuropathy is to eat the right food. You set the course from the inside out and you'll see what a difference it makes. Here are the most important cornerstones of your diet.
Omega-3 fatty acids:
These anti-inflammatory fatty acids are found in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, as well as in flaxseed, chia seeds and walnuts.
Leafy green vegetables:
Spinach, kale and other dark green leafy vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals that are important for nerve health.
Whole grain products:
Whole grains such as whole wheat bread, brown rice, and oats are...

3. Physiotherapy & Acupuncture
Targeted physiotherapy can be highly beneficial in treating polyneuropathy. Specific exercises and techniques – such as stretching and muscle strengthening – help reduce pain and improve functionality. Another advantage is that a professional physiotherapist can use manual therapy to address specific problem areas individually. In Germany, many practices specialize in the standard treatment of chronic polyneuropathy.
Acupressure and acupuncture are traditional treatment methods that can help relieve nerve pain in some patients. Both aim to balance the body’s energy flow, which can contribute to pain relief.

4. Yoga
Yoga is certainly one of the healthier and very successful therapeutic approaches for treating polyneuropathy. Basically, of course, exercise is the be-all and end- all - no matter whether it is yoga, swimming, walking or muscle training.
But here are a few points about what regular exercise can do for you.
Stress reduction: Yoga is known for its relaxing effects that can reduce stress and anxiety. Stress is a known factor that can aggravate all kinds of illnesses, so reducing stress can also alleviate the symptoms of PNP.
Improve blood circulation: Many yoga poses increase blood flow throughout the body. Improved circulation can help soothe inflamed or irritated nerves and reduce pain.

5. Cold therapies
Let's move on to our absolute favorite, because the application of cold in polyneuropathies has outstanding effects on the nervous system, which can contribute to the direct relief of symptoms.
To understand this effect, it helps to look at the body's physiological reactions to cold.
Slowing of nerve conduction velocity:
Cold slows down the speed of transmission of nerve impulses. In the extremities, this can lead to a reduction in unpleasant sensations such as tingling, burning or pain. The nerves are less "reactive", which can lead to a certain calming of the symptoms.
Reduction of the inflammatory response:
Although inflammation is not necessarily a primary factor in PNP, an accompanying inflammatory response in...

RELAXATION THROUGH COOLING
As described above, the application of cold can effectively alleviate the unpleasant and painful symptoms of polyneuropathy. This type of therapy is therefore increasingly used in medicine - e.g. in the form of cryochambers or cooling ointments.

The vicious circle of pills – an interview with Kalter Bruder® founder Carsten
Carsten, what motivated you to found Kalter Bruder®?
"I have been suffering from restless legs for about 10 years and at some point I was prescribed tablets that are often used for RLS. However, the side effects were so severe that I had to stop taking them. Since then, I have been asking myself what natural alternatives there are, not only for restless legs."
What is your general opinion on current treatment methods for classic age-related illnesses?
"The vast majority of customers who try Kalter Bruder® have already taken tablet. There is a reason why these often very desperate people are looking for alternatives to conventional medicine. Whether you suffer from...
